I lost a close friend over this same situation by letting him borrow money for "rent;" it's a tragic and powerless situation.

Apparently our friendship was only worth $200 to him, which I find insulting.

I used to go with his family to eat pizza together every Wednesday :[

My husband loaned a few hundred dollars to some friends for rent once when they cried about being broke and fearing eviction. They turned up with a giant stack of anime.

I have wealthy friends who also have wealthy friends. One of these friends (I never met her personally) called my friend in a panic claiming she and her husband couldn't make payroll because of a bank clerical error, and needed $50,000. My friend, being a good person, took money out equity, and gave it to her no questions asked.

Then the delays started. And the lying. There were possible legal issues at play since the husband was also my friends' financial adviser and this could be viewed badly if it came to light.

Turns out this lady had gambling and pill additions. She'd emptied their bank account and was trying to cover it up. Because the husband made so much money, she'd gotten away with it until this point. My friends finally got their money back, but it took over a year, and ruined their relationship with this other couple.
