Back in 1984 I worked a hellish summer planting trees around a lake that had been a sand mine for 30 years. Blistering hot days and over 100,000 seedlings. Its now a forest with 50 foot high poplars, crab apples and oaks in what had been a 200 yard ring of barren sand around the lake.
edit: I just discovered that the forest was not as successful as I had believed. Most of the forest died but when I checked it 10 years ago the area I was in was OK. I was technically trespassing with my children to show it to them and got out as soon as I could.
