The Jon Bernthal starrer maintains Marvel's relationship with the streaming giant as corporate parent Disney plans an SVOD service of its own.

The Punisher is staying put at Netflix.

The streaming giant has renewed Daredevil spinoff Marvel's The Punisher for a second season, helping to cement the future of the Marvel universe on the platform amid Disney's plans for an SVOD service of its own. Netflix announced the news Tuesday afternoon on Twitter.

Starring Walking Dead grad Jon Bernthal as the Marvel favorite, the drama launched Nov. 17 to mixed reviews. (The Hollywood Reporter TV critic Daniel Fienberg called the series "punishing, indeed.) After less than a month, the show has a 60 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the 94 percent audience score painting a different picture among the show's diehard fanboy target audience. (Netflix, like Amazon and Hulu, does not release ratings information.)

From ABC Studios and Marvel Television, the series counts showrunner Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) and the latter company's head of TV Jeph Loeb among its producing team.

Punisher is the sixth Marvel series on Netflix and joins Daredevil (renewed for season three), Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage (with the latter trio all picked up for sophomore runs). Mashup miniseries The Defenders awaits word on a potential second season.

The news comes as Disney is readying its own stand-alone SVOD service, pulling all of its Marvel feature films from Netflix. That has led to industry speculation that the Marvel roster of TV shows could be next.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that S1 of the Punisher didn't have a single goddamn ninja? I very much hope to see this trend continue for S2.

Bernthal was very impressive in this. This is such a good role for him.
