squeenix, particularly the FFXIV devs, talked about this a bit. They said that nobody plays the uglier races in their games. They said that the female for their 'ugly' race (orc like, but more human) was less than 1% of the player population.
When they added in a dragon-human race, they initially had them be much more monster-like, but changed it to be more attractive humanoids because of the likelyhood that nobody would play the new race.
Wow is also a good example of this, as the female dwarves/orcs/taurens are a tiny, tiny portion of the player base.
