As a songwriter that's a nightmare, because all I know are snippets of riffs I recorded, scales and patterns.

I get this. But I'm a musician who will soon graduate with a 4 year degree in performance. Still can't play anything if I'm not actively working on it.
Time to work on improv, I suppose...
