Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) will continue their investigations into the minds of serial killers for a second season of Mindhunter.

Netflix accompanied Thursday's renewal news with a social media teaser with the tagline: "We need to talk to more subjects." The series' Instagram account also announced the news with some photographs by filmmaker and executive producer David Fincher.

The critically acclaimed 1977-set drama follows Ford and Tench, agents in the FBI serial crime unit, along with psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), as they interview and study a string of well-known violent offenders in an attempt to find answers, ultimately classifying the "serial killer" term. Real-life murderers portrayed on the first season included the BTK Killer, Richard Speck, Jerry Brudos and Edmund Kemper (aka the Co-Ed Killer), who is played by standout Cameron Britton.

The first season ended with an emotional cliffhanger for Ford, as both he and his partner begin to experience their own psychological effects from their study. With the announcement of a second season comes speculation about which famous killers will be featured, should the finale events resolve themselves. Charles Manson has been referred to as a goal 'get' by Ford and David Berkowitz, aka the Son of Sam, has also been heavily mentioned, though both have yet to appear.

Mindhunter was created by Joe Penhall (The Road) and is executive produced by Fincher — who also directed four episodes — along with Charlize Theron, Joshua Donen and Cean Chaffin.

The series, which is based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker's true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, has a 96 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been well-received by critics since its mid-October launch. The Hollywood Reporter's review said Mindhunter was off to a "killer beginning," revealing itself "as a suspense series hinging on after-the-fact investigations into the heads and hearts of known murderers. Not whodunit so much as whydidyou?"

Mindhunter is the latest pickup for Netflix. The streaming giant — which currently has the forthcoming final season of House of Cards (another Fincher series) on hiatus after firing its disgraced star Kevin Spacey — recently renewed Jason Bateman's drama Ozark, true-crime spoof American Vandal and comedies Friends From College and Atypical. The streamer also handed out a two-season order to Ryan Murphy's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel series, Nurse Ratched, and added The Eddy, a musical drama from La La Land's Damien Chazelle.

The first season of Mindhunter is now streaming on Netflix.
