Anderson's design beat 499 other entries. As per the contest rules, his symbol was immediately given over to the public domain. He was then awarded $2,500 in cash which he used to study for a year at the University of Stockholm.

For some reason, it never occured to me that this logo was designed by somebody and somehow implemented world wide.
