Jim Sterling made a great point in a recent video:
EA just f'ed up so hard, and so publicly, that even if pay to win lootboxes don't become outlawed, mainstream perception of lootboxes may just become to the game industry what "high fructose corn syrup" is to the food industry. Not illegal, but games that have it will immediately appear repulsive to consumers, while games that don't will capitalize on the trend and paste their absence in BIG FREAKING LETTERS just like food packaging does with the "NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!"

How's Madden doing? EA is stabilized with that game. Every year they update the Roster, add 1 new mechanic and ship them back out.
Edit: this includes FIFA and NHL

I wonder if EA is feeling that sense of pride and accomplishment now
