The kiwi lays the biggest egg in proportion to it's size of any bird in the world. After the egg hatches, the parents soon abandon their young as they're precocial and can fend for themselves. There are 5 species of kiwi, all of which are at the risk of extinction.

New Zealand is doing a lot to save these guys from extinction. One species (Little Spotted Kiwi) found almost exclusively on offshore islands is actually increasing in numbers, as is another species (Okarito Brown Kiwi/Rowi) found in a remote forest in the South Island. The Southern Brown Kiwi (Tokoeka) and North Island Brown Kiwi are increasing in a few populations, but they're declining in other places. The Great Spotted Kiwi is declining throughout its range.
