You know these type of students are gonna make a difference in the world. They're actually pursuing an education, wanting to better themselves. If I had missed my bus, I would have just thought, "Shoot. Guess no school for me today." And take a nice little walk back home. I look up to these kind of people.

Something similar happened to me when I was younger. Living on my own for less than a month when a kid primary school age knocks on my door and asks if I can take them to school. I ask where his parents are and he says "they went to work". From what I gathered, they sent the kid down to the bus stop, and left for work, and the bus was running a little late. The kid got scared when the bus was late, walked back home, and when the door was locked, started knocking on other houses and I was the first to answer. I asked what school he went to, but I was kind of new to the area and couldn't make out from what he was telling me what school he actually went to. He didn't have a backpack or anything for me to check. I asked for his parents names and he told me, but couldn't really tell me where they worked. He said his mom and dad worked "at the books". He didn't say if he was a library, or another school, or what. I kept asking but he was kind of scared and just kept telling me it was "at the books, where they have the books". I ended up taking him into the house and letting him play video games while I called every "books" place I could find. Eventually I was lucky and did find them at the local college. One of them came and picked him up and thanked me for not letting him run around scared outside. I'm lucky they were there, as the next place I was calling was the police.

I was kind of shaken up because this was a lost kid that I'd taken responsibility for by letting him into my house. I wanted to chew the dad the fuck out for letting this happen, but I was just happy that he was a) back with his folks b) not under my care anymore.
