My mom did this with me, with a Nintendo 64. Told me for months I didn't need it - I had a Sega Genesis. And everyone knows, and still knows, N64 was the greatest thing for a young boy at that time. It was THE SHIT. "3-D MARIO"!!
It blew my 9 year old mind. My friend had one before Christmas with Super Mario 64 and I couldn't believe my eyes.
I was so convinced she didn't get it for me that when I opened everything on Christmas of '96 I wasn't even disappointed that it wasn't there. I mean she had a point. It WAS really expensive, and Sega was pretty good still.
Then she said "You have one more gift", a large box that was kept hidden away from the rest of things.

Absolutely no Nintendo Switch, no Mario Odyssey, and for sure no Breath of the Wild. Unless Santa intervenes, that is. ;)

I cried like a baby.
I miss those times. I had a great childhood.
