It kind of reminds me of a sci-fi novel I read, I think as far back as the '70s or '80s, in which the US had gotten so violent that murders were no longer reported individually. News reports would give body counts and how much they'd changed from the day before, like the stock market. It wasn't even a civil war exactly, just lots of ambient anger and most people had guns.
