This was taken from the lava viewing area at Big Island, HI. It's actually pretty far away (so people don't get poison by the toxic fumes and where the land is stable), but you can still hear to pop and hiss as molten lava enters the ocean.

We waited for over 2 hours for the right lighting. There was this magical 10 minute just after sunset where the glow of the lava balanced out with the ambient light. The swirling steam that you see here changes from second to second and each shot is dramatically different from the previous one.

ISO 200 F8 1.3sec 560mm(400mm+1.4x Extender), no filter.
