This was on the “Lares Trek.” We were finally able to convince the dog to stay with a family of shepherds after he found a friendly sheep he took a liking to.
This happened to me as well! This doggo https://i.imgur.com/yNyDMnc.jpg followed us for a big part of our trek. He even came with us at night when we walked to the thermal springs, made us feel protected. It was really sad to see the tour guides kick him out of the bus (animals were not allowed) and then see the dog run behind the bus until it couldn’t catch up with us anymore. My girlfriend almost cried.
Edit: This was on our way to Macchu Picchu, and we left the dog with people. According to locals, dogs know the routes to small towns.
In the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata, a lone dog follows the heroes all the way to the mountain (the top symbolizes heaven). On the way to the top, 5 of the heroes die and end up in hell. Only the eldest makes it to the top, along with the dog, who reveals himself as a god. Just an FYI
