I'm not a biochemist but it sounds like what he's saying could be summarized by "I'm checking what happens when we alter a few specific genes in yeast".
When you're talking to people about the complicated science you're doing, there's always a way to oversimplify it so it sounds cool and interesting to them. If someone tells you about his work like that, it's plain condescension or lack of understanding.
As Rutherford nicely puts it: "An alleged scientific discovery has no merit unless it can be explained to a barmaid."

I deal with people like this on a daily basis. They do some undergrad research and think they are the shit.
