The 72nd Highlanders, the Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders. Originally raised in 1778 in the West Highlands by Kenneth MacKenzie in thanks for the restoration of his Earldom.

It was made up of an amalgamation of Clans but the largest portion was MacRaes, as well as MacKenzies and Murrays.

They served in various posts in India during and around the 2nd and 3rd Anglo-Mysore war in the 1780's and 90's.

In the Napoleonic wars they served no major role other than garrisoning Maderia and Cape town. They where part of the battle of Blaauwberg and the invasion of Isle de France.

In the Victorian era they where part of: -Sixth Xhosa War -Preston Strike -Crimean War (Siege of Sevestopol) -Indian Rebellion -Second Anglo-Afghan War

In the 1880's, in the Childers reforms they merged with the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders, to form the Seaforth Highlanders.
