This is much more that just fall colors. The structure of the branches have been thinned and shaped year after year. Probably even biannually to create that beautiful scaffold. Another thing to consider is the way the maple will react to pruning - some will panic and create suckers, crown shoots, and vertical shoots off the branches. So you must refrain from over-pruning.

This tree is so much smaller in person than I expected. This is truly my favorite garden I’ve ever been to. Great picture!
