The Iowa Department of Transportation says people ask them why they don't put signs up for deer to let them know where its safe to cross roadways.

The DOT says they get the question pretty often.

Despite what some people think, deer can't read signs, but drivers can.

The DOT explained in a Facebook post that the signs are to remind drivers to be alert of the animals.

The DOT made the post to remind people fall is breeding season for deer.

In Iowa from January 1 to October 23 there have been 3,344 crashes with animals, according to the DOT. There have been 156 injuries and one fatality from the crashes.

If that's not enough to make you be more alert when you see deer signs, those crashes have caused $14,690,650 in property damage.

How is it that we allow deer to go illiterate in this country?

Oh. We CAN read the signs; we just do whatever we want regardless.
