Microsoft’s original IntelliMouse became a status symbol and a mouse that lived on for what seemed like forever. While Microsoft discontinued the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 more than five years ago, fans of the mouse have been scrambling to stockpile them ever since. Microsoft is now bringing back the IntelliMouse with a new modern version that’s based on the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0.

The new Microsoft Classic IntelliMouse has appeared on the company’s hardware page, priced at $39.99. Twitter user Olly Cripps originally noticed the listing, and it shows that the new mouse is wired via USB like the original. Microsoft is promising even more precise tracking with a DPI range of up to 3200 for the new Classic IntelliMouse. Fans loved the DPI range of the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 and the design, so it’s understandable that Microsoft would bring this particular mouse back to life again.

The new Classic IntelliMouse also has three customizable buttons, Microsoft BlueTrack tracking for glass use, and a 1000 reports per second mouse report rate. It’s not clear when the new IntelliMouse will be available, but the product listing suggests it’ll be available in stores shortly.

Update, October 18th 5:30AM ET: Added Microsoft’s official product listing, and more photos.

I have been missing this mouse for years. It's basically the mechanical keyboard of its breed.

I got the original intellimouse back in 1998(?) when I worked at CompUSA. I loved that mouse. I changed its cable 4-5 times, and even got a used one to replace the main board once my original sensor died.

It was a giant mouse. I wear XL gloves - it was a match made in heaven.

The newer ones are a bit smaller, and some are ambidextrous - I just want that giant mouse wth good software again.

I use a Magic Mouse like someone would use an Oreo cookie like a mouse - it’s scrolling and precision makes up for the ergo - but I will totally try this new one - especially since it is wired.
