I do not believe I have ever seen a bagel that square. And it looks like it would be sweet. Are you sure you didn't just ask them to cut a doughnut in half or something?
To be fair, I'm not sure that this was malicious. There was a bagel place near my old office that sometimes someone from the office would stop at and pick up a dozen bagels or so to bring into the break room and share. They were always cut in half vertically like that, over a several year period.
I think some places, for whatever reason, just cut bagels that way. Either that, or that shop had a serious commitment to a long con joke.
