Jaimie Johnson: Born Rich, Children Of the Insanely Wealthy

In the early 2000s, Jamie Johnson, an heir of the Johnson & Johnson fortune, decided to make a documentary about the experiences of children of the insanely wealthy. The result, Born Rich, premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and is a fascinating (and infuriating) look at the lives of kids that have more money than many countries. This is the film that was referenced in John Oliver’s incredible takedown of Donald Trump the other night when he played a clip of an interview with Ivanka Trump. (In fairness, Ivanka was one of the more normal kids profiled.)

If you’re unsure if you want to watch it, here’s a quote from European textile heir Cody Franchetti that shows you the type of people with whom you’re dealing in this thing: “ I’m reading a book and I’m thinking about pussy, but I find when I get the pussy, I’m thinking about the book.”

Some of the film’s subjects claimed to have been tricked into being interviewed, including one that sued to have the film blocked, which was ultimately dismissed. Thus, we get to watch it.

Without watching it, Will Smith said that he almost went nuts when at like 18 or 19, he was a millionaire. He said that the concept of never having to work again; to not have the financial pressures that day to day life impacts on you, really changes your psychology when eveyone else is under that daily work stress. Plus, having fame, women trying to have sex with you all the time, having people come for you maliciously, it's really different. I know I would personally have a hard time being famous, but not a hard time being rich. When you are rich, there are less likely people there to attack you. When you are famous, your underwear gets stolen in your hotel and sold on ebay (Brittany Spears).

I remember watching this on HBO and thinking how disconnected these kids are from the rest of the world. Not that I felt bad for them or jealous, they just seemed so abnormal compared to the rest of society.
