A girl's color photos from 104 years ago.

Authored by imgur.com and submitted by yannireddit123

These photos are 104 years old (believed to have been taken in 1913). They have not been colorized. Before film, there was a photo process called "autochrome." These photos are from the original plates. They are mostly of 16 yr old named Christina Elizabeth Frances Bevan, who was born on March 8, 1897, and died in Aylesbury in 1981 at the age of 84. She was never married and had no children. She was the daughter of Edwyn and Mary Bevan. Her father, Edwyn Robert Bevan, was born in 1870 and died in 1943 and was a prominent philosopher, writer on comparative religions and lecturer in Hellenistic Studies at King’s College, London. Her mother, formally the Hon. Mary Waldegrave, was born in 1870, married Edwyn on April 25, 1896, and thus became Mary Bevan. She was known by family and friends as 'Daisy', and it is not known when she died. Christina's sister, Anne, died about two years after her in 1983. Other locations of the photos include Lulworth Cove, Dorset; and the beach at West Lulworth. The photos were taken by a family friend, this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mervyn_O%27Gorman . Christina's family lived at no. 6 Chelsea Embankment – just a two minute walk from the photographer's home at 21 Embankment Gardens.

What always get me with old photos like this is the realisation that this pretty young girl isn't just older but long dead. Somewhere I've got a colour photo of a girl in her late teens taken in the 1920s. She's gorgeous, but again she must be dead by now. It seems very odd.

It's amazing how these photos really make the past seem less 'different' than today. Black and white photos for me have always been a barrier between relating the somewhat distant past with my own time.

Don't know if everyone can see the imgur caption, so here you go:
