It's interesting that I wondered why he didn't specify that it was the Second World War, then I realized it was 1932 and the second one hadn't started yet. The war was simply the World War, no other war to confuse it with.
He gave his eyes in the "war to end all wars." That was supposed to be it. He was saving the world. Surely the horrors of The Great War would be enough to stop us from ever letting it happen again.
By the time this photo was taken, Hitler was already beginning his rise to power.

It's really sad to think that this guy went to war for his country and his country leaves him to beg on the streets after he lost his eyes
