Tom Petty Found Unconscious in Full Cardiac Arrest (UPDATE)

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a "do not resuscitate" order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live through the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

12:30 PM PT -- We're told after Petty got to the hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support.

Tom Petty was rushed to the hospital Sunday night after he was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

EMTs rushed to his Malibu home and were able to get a pulse. He was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and our sources say he was put on life support.

Petty's condition is unknown but was critical from the moment he was found.

Petty, who became famous with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1978 with "Breakdown," is 66.

We've been in touch with numerous people from Petty's camp and they are clearly upset but not talking.

Petty just wrapped a huge tour, ending at the Hollywood Bowl late last Monday.

As a Canadian, I've always thought of Tom Petty as one of the most quintessentially "American" classic rock acts, along with the likes of Bruce Springsteen and John Melloncamp. Not just in the sense that they are American, but that I think their music embodies the American spirit.

An already sad day just got worse.

Thanks for the music, Tom.

I'm so bummed that I never got to see him live. I love his music so much. The 4-hour documentary "Running Down A Dream" about Tom & The Heartbreakers is one of the best rock docs I've ever seen. RIP you LEGEND!
