This picture made me curious, who was he and why are they depicting him in such a seemingly silly way?
He was the king of Sweden from 1611-1632 - Gustav II Adolf. He was apparently pretty awesome and is basically credited for making Sweden not lame anymore.
He was also a religious nut and reportedly wore no armor into battle saying "The Lord God is my armor." He died in battle, so apparently God isn't very good armor. Armor would probably have been better armor.
Anyway, I can't find much info on this painting exactly, but given that information, I would be it is him handing his sword to god or something of religious significance. Which is a much less satisfying explanation than him being on drugs.
