We had a simulation drill on the morning which woke me up and made me run like a madman outside. Then a couple of hours later this happens. All during the anniversary of the infamous quake of '85. World's crazy right now. I've packed the essentials in case we get another one. Roomate's currently confined at his faculty, they're not allowing anyone outside. My sister's still not answering or even receiving any messages but I'm confident it's because the signal is faulty. Kitty tried to claw her way out of my arms, again. I've seen pictures of buildings destroyed, one of them next to a friend's. Everyone is on edge, especially considering what this date represents to many many people. Hope nothing too bad happens.

Edit: So many buildings are down. The constant ghostly hum of distant sirens and helicopters is relentless. It feels straight out of a movie. Still no word from my sister. I'm almost sure it's because she ran out of battery. I'm hoping.

Also, news about gunpoint muggings are being spread. If true, these people are the absolute worst kind of scum. To whomever is in Mexico City right now- stay safe. Be prepared. (Alleged muggins seem to be mostly unconfirmed rumours. I got the info from a couple of friends. I thought it'd be better to be safe than sorry. Never intended to spread misinformation, totally on me).

Edit 2: Roomate's home now. Sister texted back. We're all cool. I'm immeasurably grateful that nobody close to me got hurt. I'm equally sorry for all the victims and their relatives. Everyone who lost something today. Be it a home, a brother, a friend. Nobody deserves this. I'll research how to volunteer, if anyone's got info on this I'll appreciate it.

Hi all, earthquake perspective here.

Live Thread

What you need to know: Source

Magnitude: Currently sitting at a 7.1 by the USGS. This is a major earthquake for region

Depth: The depth is currently placed at 51km. Remember that this can change through further review, however typically the deeper the quake is, the softer the shaking.

Location: 5km East Northeast of Raboso, Mexico. This quake is very close to Puebla and Mexico City, making this a particularly dangerous earthquake due to the population density of the area.

Intensity of the Shaking: The USGS Shakemap currently shows Severe (VIII) shaking on the Mercalli intensity scale. This means that there is a high chance of moderate/heavy damage in and around the epicentre. Remember that as you move further away from the epicentre, the strength of the shaking decreases, however, it can still pose a risk to structures both manmade and natural.

Did You Feel It?: An important part of earthquake research and accuracy is gathering information from people who felt the event. If you felt this earthquake, please fill this out when you can safely do so.

PAGER: ORANGE

Expected Fatalities:

Expected Fatalities Probability (%) 1-10 3 11-100 19 101-1k 39 1k-10k 30 10k-100k 8 100k+ 1

Expected Costs of the Earthquake:

Expected Costs (USD) Probability (%) 10m-100m 16 100m-1b 36 1b-10b 32 10b-100b 11 100b+ 5

Aftershocks: I personally would expect this quake to have some large 5's, maybe small 6's as direct aftershocks, although this may not happen. The important thing to do is to Be prepared for further earthquakes in the region over the next few weeks/months.

I'll be around for questions and to update this post.

Stay Safe.
