Decent chance this guy was utilised as a guardian animal for a herd, sheep are a common choice to pair with a donkey. They're aggressively territorial and brave animals, making them good guards.

Donkeys take care of the coyotes, Mules take care of the mountain lions
A farmer friend of mine has a herd of goats that drew the attention of the local yotes. So, he got a donkey from the local stock auction to watch over 'em.
Well one day he pills up the the farm gate and sees that donkey out playing around throwing what he thought was a feed sack up in the air over and over.
As he got closer, he realized that jack had caught one of the goats and was just going to town tossing it around. Back to the auction it went...
