That the architect would be assured by the devil that the bridge would be safe, etc. in exchange for the first soul to cross it. The architect then made a cat cross it first, fooling the devil.

If you happen to be there, please do not attempt to climb on it.
Sadly there are dumb people out there that do so and risk the destruction of that beautiful bridge.
