Call the vending company (usually a toll free number on the front) and ask them for a newer machine or that you will switch to another vendor that does.

The newer versions of these machines have an infrared beam at the bottom that detects when this happens. If the beam didn't break by the falling purchased merchandise it makes another attempt and re-vends. If it still fails to detect it issues a refund.
