I went for a walk in the forest and came upon this ponderosa pine tree that had been struck by lightning. I called the Forest Service and they eventually extinguished it, but not before I had time to get some photos. Near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. [OC] [2834x2000]

I was backpacking alone in California in 2005 when I encountered a single tree on fire, across a small lake from the trail. I was less than a day from the trailhead, had only seen two people on horses all day, and had no way to call out. I stood there for maybe 10 minutes, watching it and pondering my options. Then I heard the helicopter, which flew in with a bucket and dipped out of the lake in front of me. I don't know why I didn't stay to see it drop it's bucket load, but I felt the situation was being handled and continued on my way. I knew at the time that it had to be a lightning strike, but that was still a surreal 10 minutes.
