Thankfully, in England they used young orphans (due to their small frame and no-one to protect them)! Until one pesky scientist (or maybe it was a doctor) realised that a lot of them were getting scrotal cancer and figured out that soot was carcinogenous. They then changed the law so that no orphans under 13 could work anymore, only the older ones...
