I saw Tool play in this building... before it was a church.

Thats a tax shelter, not a people shelter.

So after Hurricane Ike, my church youth group went to Houston to help out and one of our stops one night was this place.

It was disgusting. It wasn't church, it was a bad cross between a NFL game, a Christian rock concert, and Dr Phill. Joel was such a smug bastard and if you read between the lines, you just know he's looking for cash and that's it. Every statement about god or religion has an if-then clause attached. "If" you share your precious wealth with us as a thoughtful donation, "then" you'll feel good enough about yourself to think you're going to heaven.

Thankfully, afterwards, our pastor had a sit down and we'll talked about how fucked up it was and not ok. My church growing up was small and liberal as hell, and even if we had money, it was only because of the one amazing, grandpa to everybody, sold his tech company for millions, charitable as fuck guy who had been there for fifty years. Say what you will about religion, but a church is supposed to be more about community and mutual help and friendship and everything outside the hour a week service, at least to me it is, and I say that as someone who is now an atheist.
