Lived there in a tent for a summer as a trail worker, building the Pacific Crest Trail (yeah, it was a long time ago). It was some hard, miserable work for a city kid who had never done more physical labor than make a table in woodshop or so much as spent a night camping, but obviously the views were amazing -- life changing, really. I remember looking up at night and, for the first time, really seeing the dome of the sky. I couldn't help but say, "it looks just like the planetarium!"

It was pretty isolated work, most of the time we never saw or talked to anyone but the rest of us on the crew, but once in a while we would meet some hikers and it was such a thrill. One of the best moments of whole grueling summer was coming back home from work past the campsite of some hikers we had chatted up on the way to work that morning. In the middle of the trail was a note: "For that crazy, hard working trail crew!" And it was attached to a package with all the fixings for making s'mores. We lived the whole summer without getting resupplied, so we only had the essentials. After living on different forms of beans and rice (with or without canned meat) and sandwiches made on really bad homemade bread (it was too cold and damp to get it to rise properly), this goody bag was like mana from heaven. They probably left it there because didn't want to hike back out with the extra weight, but it was still such an amazing gesture, particularly since the work is literally pretty thankless since almost no one sees you doing it -- I still remember it 30+ years later.
