This also happened to me recently, and the barista was kind enough to say, "I wouldn't recommend you pay for the car behind you cause it's like 4 times the amount you would've paid."

Good looking out, sir.

I work at in n out and once, this happened while I was at the drive through pay window. The chain carried on for around 10 cars, all paying for the person behind them. It was awesome.

This happened to me once (although there was no note about it) and an opportunity came where I felt I should pay it forward.

When I was in Asakusa, Japan, I went to small Ramen shop and was enjoying my meal. Another man walked in and sat next to us. English was his first language and we found out he was also from America. We chatted pretty much the whole time and it was the first time in our trip we actually COULD have a full conversation with a stranger. When I left the Ramen shop, I told the owner I wanted to pay for his meal. I'll probably never see him again, but I just wanted him to know how much I appreciated his company. Maybe one day he'll do the same for someone else.
