These are U.S. Troops at Camp Nelson in Jessamine County in Kentucky. More than 23,000 black Kentucky men joined the Union Army during the Civil War, most to literally fight for their freedom. These men were putting everything on the line for a future for their families and descendants. Source.

They do exist. Nobody talks about statues unless they’re controversial, but there are statues honoring black soldiers during the civil war. In case anyone wants to visit them and support the parks that DON’T honor those who fought against the US:
