As a southerner, my opinion has always been that removing monuments which celebrate the cause of the confederacy makes sense, but that monuments dedicated to the dead (like Silent Sam on the UNC campus) should remain as a reminder of what was lost and what should never happen again. That being said, people should remove statues through legal means instead of just destroying public property. That way, historically significant monuments can be preserved in museums or moved elsewhere.
