It is REALLY cold in those old Japanese houses. I stayed in one last time I was there because I wanted to have an "authentic" experience (ha). Even though it was only early November I froze my ass--those windows are just paper and a pane of glass (if you're lucky) set very loosely in tracks, and in the house I stayed in the kitchen was open to the outside and you had to literally walk out through the backyard garden via a wooden deck to use the toilet or bath. It was a gorgeous house but holy shit. I bet it's literally freezing inside in the winter.

I love the idea of living someplace like this. In practice I would probably not like it so much, seems rough going in the winter months.
