I like to imagine that the mother and daughter still live together, so all blocking the mom will do is make things more awkward at home, and get the daughter into all kinds of trouble, because the mother is the one with the actual power, here.
Ultimately you can accept that you grew up in a poor household without essentially talking shit on your own parents. And if you "never knew how poor" your family was, you probably weren't poor, just maybe lower middle class. FFS. Trust me when I say kids who come from poor homes knew they were poor.
I know my childhood sucked and my mother had issues paying the bills as a single mother. But I'd never say, "Oh yeah we were super poor while I was growing up" anywhere within earshot of her. It's just classless. Did I eat a lot of hot dogs, chicken legs, and mac n cheese? Yeah. But I was able to eat those things and have a birthday party or get a few Christmas presents because my mom ate cereal or just my leftovers every night. Cripes.
