Get Out Likely to Have the Biggest Profit Margin of Any 2017 Film

Actor/Producer Jordan Peele’s gripping psychological thriller Get Out looks almost guaranteed to have Hollywood’s biggest profit margin this year. The surprise hit was only moderately marketed by distributor Universal Pictures and was produced on a budget of $4.5 million in association with Blumhouse Pictures

It proved to be a massive success in theaters, bringing in more than $251 million worldwide during a time of the year that traditionally does not see many breakout films. The massive profit margin can be traced to a $175 million domestic box office figure with the remainder coming from overseas.

While not the most profitable movie of 2017 (he Fate of the Furious made $1.24 billion on a $225 million budget) it does sport a 5577% profit margin, well over any other movie made this year. Looking at the rest of the year’s lineup, it’s probable that there is no other film that will end up doing so well.

Horror films with such large profit margins and wide releases end up with a sequel in just about every circumstance. Jordan Peele has talked about the direction he’d like to take with Get Out 2, which will be coming to theaters March 15, 2019. If that proves remotely as popular as the original, we will probably see another franchise being formed, which is what happened with the classic “Blair Witch Project” and “Paranormal Activity”.

While it’s still far too early in the year to make Oscar nomination predictions, Peele has a legitimate shot of being invited to the Dolby Theatre, along with some of the cast and crew of the Blumhouse movie.
