I'm just gonna say: lessons can be private. I mean it's not like he has to disclose every single person who learned from him, and if it was just something he taught for some spare cash three decades ago, who would ever know? I don't really think NYT can claim that with any sort of certainty, although OP is probably a liar regardless.
