The acting like a toy was probably like an involuntary reflex. I imagine it was innate for buzz that he had to do that. There are plenty of animals that camouflage themselves as trees and shit, but they still know that they are not trees.
Imagine if you appeared on an alien planet and communed with the locals for a while. Then, all of a sudden, without warning, some booming sounds happen in the distance that sound suspiciously like footsteps, and all the locals freeze in place and drop limp.
I'd think you'd follow their example, wouldn't you?
