The maternity package was first issued in 1938 to parents with a low income. Since 1949 it has been given to all mothers-to-be, provided they visited a doctor or municipal pre-natal clinic before their fourth month of pregnancy.

The contents of the package are updated approximately every year. It usually contains baby clothes in gender neutral colors, winter clothing, a mattress, a sleeping bag, a towel, a book, a toy, nappies, and some other basic items. Here are the contents of the 2017 baby box. The box itself can be used as a crib.

EDIT: Sleeping bag, not sleeping bad. I can't spell

They still do give those. It's not based on income, everyone gets it. You get to choose if you want money instead of the package. Almost all opt for package since it has really good clothing in it. Brand clothing changed yearly. Also the box itself is in many families used as the baby's first crip. Source: am finnish

Edit: I also slept in that box as a baby.

My family is Finnish and my Mummu still has the boxes she got when she was pregnant with my dad and uncle. I was given one of the books that was in my father's baby box and is kinda cool to have.
