I learned this in a college level math class, the professor talking about how there's an 'equation' for pretty much everything and he talked about Leonardo Da Vinci's rule on tree growth.
There is a legend that when the Earth was first covered with plants and trees this tree bragged to the creator that it was the most beautiful tree in creation.
The creator grew tired of this tree's vanity and plucked it out of the ground. The tree begged for its life not to be destroyed.
The creator gave in and stuck the tree back in the ground with the roots in the sky. The tree will never again brag about its beauty.

These are also known as "upside down" trees. Their tops look like roots, and their roots look like branches.
