Would the soldiers firing rifles at the aircraft actually have achieved anything? The rounds were a much lower caliber than those the aircraft used in dogfights.

Read a personal account of an evacuee; said the small arms available had no apparent effect on the Stuka's, which were armored. He stated he obtained a Boys AT Rifle from somewhere and delivered fire on the dive bombers, claiming to have damaged one.
