He got my attention and respect when he was against Obama in 2008. At town halls he would defend Obama and correct republicans saying all kind of crazy shit.
Seems like a good time to tell this story: Last year, I was connecting through PHX on a flight home to NYC from Hawaii. I'm waiting at the gate, and John McCain shows up solo (he's an AZ Senator) - no security guards w/ him or anything like that. He's just chilling at the gate, like three seats down from me - checking his phone, shaking hands, whatever. When it's time to board, the flight attendants usher him onto the plane first (idk, maybe security reasons, who knows). I get on the flight a couple minutes later, I'm walking down the aisle to find my seat in coach and what do I see - McCain's literally sitting in a MIDDLE SEAT right in the heart of coach, randos on either side of him, and he's totally fine. This is an 80-year-old guy who was almost POTUS, and he's just chilling in coach. I've been a democrat my whole life, but in that moment I gained SO much respect for that dude.
