This has been happening for years. In another life, around the turn of the century, I was a copy/layout editor at a local Gannett (USA Today) newspaper. They had a policy called "Mainstreaming." What that entailed was relatively benign stories that run counter to stereotype, I recall one about a black-owned vintage record store.

What it also entailed was us not running certain mugshots, Photoshop to lighten skin tones some times, and leaving the physical descriptions of certain at-large suspects out of the paper.

You can still see this today. They released the name of this jackass the day of the bombing, with Facebook images. If he had been Tariq Niwaz Al-Jahani or Daekwon Jefferson we still wouldn't know his name.
