Before and after the facial reconstruction of a wounded soldier during World War I.

During the First World War, many soldiers were wounded, maimed, crippled. The mutilation of the face was badly accepted by the society, and people were even rejected by their families. Mikaƫl Schweitzer was a surgeon who assisted in facial reconstruction surgeries of many soldiers during the war. He became the "French specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery", and died in 1918.

In the photo, you see Fernand-Louis Benoit. He was wounded on September 27, 1914, while in an observation post in the trenches.

At the end of the war, Europe counted more than 10 million dead or missing. The number of the wounded soldiers is unknown.

Plastic surgeons get a bad rap for being greedy pigs, but whenever I see shit like this I'm always taken aback at how wondrous they can be in people's lives.
