The year is 1999... " these are going to be worth something one day!" 18 years later..."ah, nope" not worth shit!"

I actually have an infuriating story about one of these.

In 3rd grade a kid had one and was flashing it around the Pokémon card black market of out playground, so of course I asked what he wanted for it.

"I want two Taillow cards"

I practically shit myself because I knew how much of an idiot this kid was, so the next day I brought my Taillow cards, traded them to him for the golden Mew and walked away grinning.

The teacher found out took the Mew and both the Taillow cards and didn't give them back until the last day of school.

She gave me a single Taillow and the kid got his card back and one of my Taillow cards.

I was not happy, I also couldn't tell my parents because trading at school wasn't allowed.

So, I was poor as shit growing up. My once a week treat was to get a chicken tender kids meal from Burger King. I desperately wanted to buy one of the golden cards, but never had the cash. I'd always ask and make sure they still had them, on the very off-chance I might somehow acquire money for it. Every week I would ask, make sure they were still there. Apparently it hit the employees right in the feels, because when they finally ran out of them, they held one back, the store's display Charizard. And when I came in that week, and dutifully asked if they still had the gold Pokemon cards for sale, the cashier gave me the Charizard they'd been holding. Told me the restaurant had it left over, and I wasn't to pay for it. I was overjoyed and so damned grateful. That Charizard card was my most prized possession for a couple of years. I still have it. When I was old enough to work, I applied at that Burger King. Didn't get hired, but yeah. One of my best memories from childhood right there.
