Tahoe Native here: Many "Cabins" like this one are time shares for rich people. Local real estate adverts say for $2 million USD you can use this 7000 square foot mansion for 1/8 of a year.

The areas these luxury time shares are located in typically have on sight maintenance and housekeeping that keep the place looking spotless.

But since I know a lot of contractors who build these "cabins" I can tell you that the slate is cheap shit that flakes and needs to be replaced after two to five years. The copper bathtubs sinks etc will start to tarnish over time and usually get chucked out once it starts to look old. The larger the windows the colder it gets in the winter and the hotter it gets inside in the summer. So "owners" will usually spend 2 weeks a year at their place and allow the rest to be used as vacation rentals for weekend visitors.

What people fail to realize is we are high up in the sierra mountains and living up here is not easy. Last winter we had 58 feet of snow, constant power outages, road closures and constant car accidents. You think it's paradise until you have to shovel your way out your front door in the winter. And wait three hours in line at the local grocery store in the summer because of the hordes of visitors are cleaning the place out.

Let's not forget about the astronomical HOA fees and regs. Or the property taxes involved in partially owning one of these beauties.

Larry Ellison bought up 12 lakeside lots on the east shore of Lake Tahoe, built a 250 million dollar 12 building compound that as far as anyone knows nobody actually lives in.

All I can say is if you come to visit Tahoe in the Summer or Winter you can identify the locals by the dead look in their eyes and that haunted look of defeat that emanates around them. Please be kind to them, there are less and less year round residents up here every year because wealthy people spent too much on their copper bathtubs and somehow think they can treat the locals as second class citizens.

If you take a bath in a copper bath tub, do you smell like pennies when you get out?
