Maybe my family was weird, I lifted it up to pee the women in the house would leave it down when they peed, if I needed to shit put the seat down do business and leave. Everyone just walked in assessed the situation, moved the seat accordingly then left. Like it was never a contentious issue growing up and now with my girl same thing.

I still put it down so germs don't get everywhere when I flush.
